Carolyn loves to create dolls and clothes for her kids and grandkids and other people's kids and grandkids. And she loves "bling" in her jewelry and fashions. She also likes to bake and gives cookies and pies as presents.
Susan was born and raised in Long Island. She married and had 2 sons. She retired with her third husband in Florida. A couple years after he passed, she developed health problems and her son, Chris, moved her to Minneapolis so he could help with her care.
Jessie was born and raised in the south. He moved to Minnesota 40 years ago in search of better work. He worked at a packing company and as a security guard. In his off-time he loved to camp, fish, and hurt. He married Mary and they have a son, Justin, who is in the service. He and his wife 2 children.
When Dawn was a girl, her father worked in civil service and took the family with him to stations in Europe. In Italy, they met Pope John XXIII and it had a big impact on her. Back in the states, she had 4 children with her 1st husband. After that relationship ended, she married a man with 7 children, who she loved as her own.
Virginia "Scotty" Scatarelli
Scotty was a go-getter from the day she was born. She married, had 6 kids, and became a nurse. She was active in her nursing union and when she retired, she spent many hours volunteering for AARP.
Norm dreamed of being a pilot and so signed up for officer training. He made it all the way through training, but just before he was to be commissioned, a heart murmur lost him his commission. He turned his attention to engineering and along the way, met the love of his life.
Maggie, one of 7 children, is especially close to her 2 sisters who are always there for each other. She works as an Executive Administrative Assistant and has a huge network of friends and colleagues.
Bob grew up in Lake City, MN and worked in a family furniture store with a funeral home in the back growing up. Bob loves people and will strike up a conversation with anyone. He has a vibrant community of friends and family. His wife Marilyn is his partner in business and at home.
Mr. Dixon loves gardening. It’s more than a passion, it’s his lifestyle. He enjoys seeing his vegetables and plants grow. Even though he faces daily challenges, he continues to work hard to up keep his home and garden because it’s what makes him happy.
American Indian Cancer Foundation
The following interviews took place at the 2014 Powwow for Hope. Powwow for Hope is an American Indian cultural gathering that promotes cancer awareness and recognizes cancer survivors within the Twin Cities American Indian community. The event is sponsored by the American Indian Cancer Foundation.
Brad was diagnosed with kidney cancer a little over three years ago. Brad utilizes a care guide to discuss advance care planning. Brad’s wife Melanie is in full support of Brad receiving assistance from a care guide. Melanie definitely recommends this collaborative model, where you have a go-to person to ask questions and seek resources.
Jane and Mike have been married for 44 years. Jane has Multiple Sclerosis and had to give up driving and is now dependent on her husband. Jane receives assistance from a care guide, Kathy Bassett. She appreciates her care guide because she has a good-ear and Mike appreciates Kathy for her empathy and resources.
Jim was driving with his parents campaigning for County Attorney and had to pull over because of chest pain. Jim went to see the cardiologist and was hooked up to an echo machine to run tests. Soon after he was informed by the doctor that he had cardiomyopathy and had to drop out of his campaign.
Ruth is a loving mother and was a long time employee of the local school district. Her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Barb, noticed that Ruth was becoming forgetful and displaying unusual behaviors. Once they took her to the doctors', they learned that Ruth had early stages of dementia. She's now been living with dementia for over seven years.
